Bringing the Hamptons look into your home doesn't have to cost the earth. If you're on a budget and in love with Hamptons style decorating here are some clever ways to get the most bang for your decorating bucks.
1. Start with your paint colour
Simply changing the paint colour of a room to a classic Hamptons colour palette of soft white and natural accents can change the entire look & feel and really open up certain spaces. It can be difficult to choose just the right white tone for your home, however so get it down to a shortlist and carry out some tests in the available light - whether it's natural or artificial. "Once you've narrowed down your colour choices paint large sample on your wall and look at them over a 24hr period in different lights to make sure you like it," says Elaine Ellis, Managing Director, Henry Oliver & Co.
"Depending on which direction your home faces, your living room looks completely different in the morning than the afternoon and on a sunny day versus a dull day, all based on the amount of natural light in your home," Elaine says.
2. The right rug
Choosing a rug is tricky but getting it right will make an enormous difference to your space. "Using the right rug can instantly transform a room," says Elaine. "It will add purpose, define a space and brighten [a room] depending on the colour chosen."
3. Trick the eye with mirrors
For a small investment you can visually double the space with strategically placed mirrors to reflect and extend your living space. "Using mirrors on darker walls to reflect light will instantly make a room seem larger," says Elaine.
4. Add a colour accent
Put your own stamp on your Hamptons style home by punctuating crisp white paint and natural textures with accents of colour - whether classic blue and white, a touch of duck egg blue or perhaps something bolder. "You can change the whole look of your room by using a strong accent colour or pattern - which can be brought in by using cushions," Elaine suggests.
5. Add warmth with task lighting
Tried and tested rules of interior design can be applied to your Hamptons home. Decorating ideas using lighting and textured finishes add layers to your home decor and build on your Hampton style. "Lamps are by far the easiest way to add atmosphere to any room, and if you choose carefully they can also become a décor focal point," Elaine advises.
6. Think like an interior designer
Get into your interior decorating groove and introduce artwork into your living spaces - even your Hamptons kitchen. "Choosing the right size, colour and style for your room will change the look and feel by adding colour, texture and patterns," says Elaine.
7. Accessorise with classic Hamptons pieces
Dress side tables and your coffee table with pieces classic style pieces for a collected look. "Small accessories such as ginger jars and florals will give any room a lift, bright florals such as orchids can also be a lovely centrepiece," Elaine suggests.
