Alternative ways to resolve disputes

Due to differences in personality, cultural backgrounds, traditions, values, needs, and perspectives, conflict is bound to occur at your real estate agency. If you are going to survive and thrive, you should learn to deal with tension and disagreement. While disputes may not be avoidable, with the right lines of communication open, they can often be easily resolved.

If you are the type of person who likes to resolve conflict instead of avoiding it, you are already at somewhat of an advantage. Most people avoid discussions or debates either because they fear to face the situation or because they worry about 'losing' the argument. If you are able to take a stance as the leader by effectively communicating your concerns and suggestions, you could notice a sense of retreat and respect from your colleague.

If however, you are fearful of confrontation, the next time you find yourself facing a destructive and disruptive conflict, consider empowering yourself with the following suggestions:

  1. Agree on a time and place to discuss the issue with all relevant parties
  2. State the problem you see and list your concerns
  3. Let the other person have his or her say
  4. Listen and ask fact-based questions
  5. Focus on one issue at a time
  6. Seek to find common ground
  7. Brainstorm solutions
  8. Agree to what the best way forward is, and a timeline for implementing it
  9. If there is no progress, reschedule another meeting with a third party and don't lose your cool

Ultimately, if you can learn to attack the argument and not the person, irrespective of the issue at hand you should win the respect of others.

Little life lessons to boost your confidence and communication skills

  1. Good grace and even some humour will disarm your opponent
  2. Research your facts first and be precise
  3. Acknowledge people's emotions
  4. Remember that facts are often misinterpreted when emotions come into play
  5. Be patient, most problems resolve with time
  6. Remember that not all conflicts are negative - try to take the view that disputes generate clarity and raise awareness of hidden issues

Avoiding conflict can be unhealthy for both the clarity of your mind and the success of your job as a real estate agent. Although it can be hard, try to face mistakes, problems, and disagreements. Conflict resolution should ultimately improve your workplace and better your team's productivity.
